On Sunday, an Israeli delegation traveled to Qatar to advance negotiations over a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza. The move comes shortly before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday.
The Israeli government is under growing domestic pressure to end the war and secure a permanent truce. While hardliners within Netanyahu’s coalition remain opposed, others, including Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, have voiced support for a deal.
Hamas recently replied to a U.S.-brokered ceasefire plan “in a positive spirit.” President Trump stated that Israel had already agreed to the key conditions of the proposal, which includes a 60-day truce. However, a Hamas-aligned Palestinian official noted that disputes remain over humanitarian aid, access through the Rafah crossing into Egypt, and the schedule for Israeli troop withdrawal.
Netanyahu’s office dismissed Hamas’s requested amendments as “unacceptable,” but confirmed that talks would continue in Qatar based on the original Qatari proposal, which Israel had endorsed. Netanyahu also reiterated that disarming Hamas remains a non-negotiable demand.
Public Calls for Action
Mass protests erupted in Tel Aviv on Saturday, with demonstrators demanding an agreement to bring home the approximately 50 hostages still held by Hamas. Families of the captives expressed concern that not all hostages would be returned in the proposed deal.
Dalia Cusnir, whose relative is among the hostages, said: “We fear this will be a partial deal. But if this is the way to save lives, we’ll support it and continue fighting for the return of everyone.”
The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people and abducting 251. Israel’s subsequent military response has left more than 57,000 Palestinians dead, according to Gaza’s health ministry, and devastated much of the region, creating a massive humanitarian crisis.
Roughly 20 of the remaining hostages are believed to still be alive. Many others were freed through diplomatic efforts or recovered during military operations.
