South Korean Prosecutors Seek Detention of Ex-President Yoon Over Martial Law Case

International; Date: 06 July, 2025.

South Korean special prosecutors have filed a fresh request to detain former President Yoon Suk Yeol, just a day after he appeared for questioning over his controversial martial law declaration last December. Yoon is facing serious charges, including insurrection, abuse of power, and obstruction of justice.

He was previously arrested in January after resisting a warrant but was released after 52 days on procedural grounds. Prosecutors now argue that new evidence justifies his detention, although they declined to provide details ahead of the court hearing.

Yoon’s legal team dismissed the latest move as unjustified, claiming the prosecution has failed to produce credible evidence. They vowed to challenge the arrest warrant in court.

The former president is accused of using presidential security forces to block his arrest and attempting to enforce martial law on December 3, 2024—a decision reversed within six hours after lawmakers physically breached security barricades to vote it down.

Yoon was officially removed from office in April after the Constitutional Court upheld his impeachment, marking a dramatic fall for a leader in a country that has worked hard to distance itself from its authoritarian past.

The insurrection charge carries the possibility of life imprisonment or even the death penalty. A special prosecution team of over 200, appointed by new liberal President Lee Jae-myung in June, is now leading the investigation.

Yoon continues to deny all allegations.
