South Korea’s Prime Minister and Acting President Han Dak-soo has resigned. It is believed that he may take on greater responsibilities. He may run in next month’s presidential election, local media reported. The news agency AP reported this information on Thursday (May 1).
The report said that the People Power Party (PPP) is in disarray after the recent dismissal of President Yun Suk-yeol. On the other hand, Han has emerged as a potential candidate. Observers believe that he may officially launch his presidential campaign tomorrow, Friday (May 2).
“I have two paths before me. One is to complete my current responsibilities, and the other is to leave this responsibility and take on greater responsibilities. Finally, I have decided that I will step down from my position to do what I can and need to do to deal with the crisis we are facing,” Han said on national television.
He holds a doctorate in economics from Harvard. He has held many top positions, including trade minister, finance minister, and ambassador to the United States. He has served as prime minister twice—first under liberal President Roh Moo-hyun in 2007-2008 and then under Yoon.
